AKA Give to the Max 2024 - AKA in The Family

This blog post will serve as a reflection on AKASPORT and the impact AKA as an organization has on families around Minnesota. Additionally, we will hear examples from the leadership team as to how AKA has impacted each of us, and looks to change the face of youth sports unilaterally.

Marketing Director parker harrington - Sports and Family

Sports bring families together in meaningful ways. At AKA, this is especially true. AKA understands the demands of a busy family life, and that’s been clear to me since I started here. For many parents, especially those juggling work and home responsibilities, finding opportunities for their kids to thrive can be a challenge. Growing up in the Twin Cities I am used to my parents driving me all over the place in order to make sure I was staying active, making friends, having fun, etc. It’s a pleasure to be able to see what AKA does for families (especially during the camp season).

My favorite part of any given camp day is when the campers are picked up after an awesome day at camp. This is where you get to see campers tell their parents with pride about what they learned, the friends they’ve made, and the fun they had. I’ve seen firsthand how our programs provide more than just athletic opportunities—they’re a lifeline for working parents and a place where kids can grow in confidence, independence, and community. Additionally, I love hearing feedback as to how camp hours accommodate for the working parent. That’s quite literally why we do it! Drop off from 7:00am - 9:00am and pickup from 4:00pm - 6:00pm ensures that parents are able to comfortably drop off and pick up their children without having to worry about work hours.

Coaching Director Robert Lowery - Family at camp

Being an employee of AKA and also having a camper in the program is very special to me. My son Theo has done AKA All Sports Camp for the past 2 years. In those 2 years I've seen a lot of growth! He is an only child so getting to meet and make new friends has been very beneficial for him. I've seen his confidence and socialization grow, as well as his athletic abilities. He's learned so many different sports and body movements that he's excelled in his team sports of football and basketball. My favorite part is how active he stays at camp. By the time we get home he is WIPED OUT! So in the evening he's calm and doesn't need to get energy out. That's when we focus on family time. We talk, laugh, game, read and then get ready for bed. It truly is a recipe for success.

Programs Director Mckaela BormanN- AKA All Along

For the past 16 years, I've had the privilege to be a part of AKASPORT, where every day brings new energy, laughs, and learning experiences. I've worn many hats here, from Coach-- leading activities and playing alongside the kids, to a Director--  training our incredible staff and overseeing operations, and now as a Programs Director-- where I manage field trips, transportation, customer service, and more. Each role has given me a unique view of what makes AKASPORT so impactful - not only for the kids but for their families and our team.

At AKASPORT, we know that sports are more than just games. Sports build resilience, teamwork, and confidence. Over the years, I've spoken with countless parents who tell me how much they appreciate having a safe, fun, and enriching environment where their kids can thrive. They see the difference AKASPORT makes, not just as a program but as a support system that helps their kids in the long run.

I look back on my time here, and I am grateful for every role I have been a part of. I can't wait to see the lasting impact we'll continue to make on countless kids and families.

Supporting Families Together

This year, as we prepare for Give to the Max Day on November 21st, 2024, we’re reminded of the impact we’ve had—and the work still to be done. Every donation helps us provide these opportunities to even more kids and families, ensuring that no child misses out on the chance to grow and thrive.
